During a recent news segment a security expert demonstrated a striking example of how tech gadgets kept in your car can make you a victim for car theft, and even home burglary. The main target was a GPS left firmly mounted on the dashboard, while the owner was at a shopping mall, a gym, or involved in other activities. The thieves broke into the vehicle, and when they did, also found a set of keys.

They started the car and pressed "Home" into the GPS device, which guided the culprits right to the victim’s home. Once in the driveway, all they needed do was use the garage door remote attached to the visor of the car, and use a second key on the victim’s key ring, which was to the back door of the home.

So here are some things you should remember when you exit your car:

(1) Retrieve the GPS from the dashboard mount, and consider taking it with you, or at least storing it in an area out of sight. Store the GPS cord out of view also.

(2) Rather than programming, "Home" into the GPS. Perhaps you should consider programming the home address into the "other addresses" section instead.

(3) Another thing to remember is that leaving your vehicle registration papers in the car, also usually provides your home address.

(4) Consider removing the garage door remote or placing out of sight. Be certain to not leave any keys behind.

Making certain to lock your car acts as a deterrent to theft. However, leaving technical devices behind can become too great of a temptation to thieves. So it is best to not make things easier for them.
